Howell Township Public Schools
Instrumental Music Department
Your child recently saw an assembly explaining how to participate in the Instrumental Music Program. All students in the fourth and fifth grade may begin taking lessons on band instruments this fall. Instrumental music instruction is offered during the school day, according to a schedule that contributes to your childʼs educational success.
The following instruments are taught:
Flute, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone and Percussion**
**Please note: All potential 4thgrade percussionists are required to take a proficiency test prior to instrument rental or purchase. (5thgrade percussion is available only to 4thgrade percussion students who have completed a full year in the school band.)
How Much Does it Cost?
Your only expense will be to provide your child with an instrument in good working order and the Measures of Success Instruction Book. Instrumental music instruction is absolutely FREE!
How Do I Get An Instrument For My Child?
You may buy, rent or borrow from any source.
If you choose to rent an instrument, we have for your convenience, included a recommended rental company for your consideration.Instrument rental information, pricing, and payment can be found on their website. All forms of payment are done directly through the rental company and are not to be sent to school.
If you intend to purchase or borrow an instrument fromanother source (i.e. internet, Amazon, eBay, neighbor, family member) please consult your school band director first so we can assist you in determining the quality of the instrument you are considering. All instruments need to be in excellent working condition.
*Clarinet and saxophone players will need to purchase reeds in order for the instrument to work.
We recommend a minimum of 3 working reeds at all times.
We would love to work with your child! Their success in this content area will be directly proportional to the amount of time they spend practicing the instrument at home. Please complete the attached colored permission slip and return it to your child’s homeroom teacher.
Thank you in advance for giving your child the wonderful opportunity to benefit from this educational experience. Please contact your Band Director should you have any questions or concerns.
